Static
IP
A static IP is an
IP Address that stays the
same every time the user logs in. The opposite is a
dynamic IP, which changes
every time a user logs in.
We can provide static IP addresses
for an additional cost per account and a setup fee. The
user must be using a Starnet/Megapop number. To create a
static IP account, give the user an @staticusa or @dual.staticusa
realm upon creation. If
they need a dedicated
account, create the user as usual with a @dedicated.net
or @dual.dedicated.net realm, and send us an email to
request the static IP. Send requests to
sales@lanzing.net.
Here are just a few examples of why a
user might want a Static IP:
- They want to
connect with a specific location on a regular basis.
For example, they frequently use
VPN software to connect from home to work, and
their administrator needs a specific IP address for
security reasons. Or they have financial reporting
software that links with corporate headquarters every
night, which only accepts requests from known IPs.
- Conversely, you
are the workplace, and wish to allow your users to
connect to your network from home.
- You are setting
up an internal network and need a consistent IP
setting in your router or
firewall.
- You frequently
play multiplayer games and need to have the same IP
for a certain game.
There are many other reasons users
will request a static IP. Normally, only more
experienced users will request one.
This feature is very popular. Since most ISP's do not
offer static IP's to their customers you can typically
get away with charging a setup fee plus a monthly fee
for this service. Advertising static IP's is a great way
to attract new customers!
IP Address
Just as each building on a street has a unique
address, so does each computer on the Internet. These
numberic designations are called IP Addresses.
Example IP: 192.168.1.2
All IP addresses are broken in four octets divided by
dots (.). Each octet can contain a number from 0 to 255.
This addressing scheme is known as IP4.
In order to log on to the internet, a computer must
have an IP Address, and it must be unique, not used by
anyone else.
Dynamic IP
When a user dials in, they are assigned an
IP Address from a pool, so
that their IP changes every time. Most internet
connections are given dynamic IPs so that those IP
addresses can be "recycled".
This is the opposite of a
static IP.
